She went to Melbourne, to talk about me.
She was a speaker at the Early Childhood Intervention Australia #ECIA National Conference in Melbourne. Mum was invited there, to talk about me and how she felt when she sent me to preschool. She was there to talk about her concerns and worries, regarding my preschool attendance. (Concerns because I have quadriplegic cerebral palsy, a cortical vision impairment, I'm non-verbal and need support with everything. Concerns because maybe they would have trouble feeding me. Concerns because maybe no one would play with me and I would sit in a corner all day.) She was there to talk about the importance of me attending a regular preschool and how important it is that I am included in all school activities.
My teacher was there, too! Caitlin was also invited to be a speaker at the conference. She spoke about the same thing, but from the perspective of the preschool. She has always believed in me and was very important in developing the inclusive environment I have experienced at school.
When it was their turn to speak, the room filled with people. There were people standing at the sides, too. The room was full of people ready to listen!
They shared my story, and talked about my preschool. They talked about inclusive education, adapting curriculum and activities and the importance of being engaged in learning activities with my peers.
Mum and Caitlin loved the experience!
And, they had people come up to them, when they had left, telling them how inspiring their speech had been. I am so proud of them!
I am so grateful to Jane. She is a very impressive lady, with a whole bunch of letters after her name. She met us at the Inclusive Playgroup. Jane has always seen the good in me, so I love her. It was Jane who arranged for Mum and Caitlin to attend this conference. Jane believes in Mum and Caitlin, too. Thank you!
It's nice to know we might be able to make someone else's journey with disabilities a little easier.
#ECIA is the peak body for early childhood intervention in NSW, promoting the interests of young children with developmental delays and disabilities and their families. (facebook)
