Today is a great day for people to stand up and talk about their own mental health.
Today aims to increase awareness and advocacy for Mental Health Education.
Australia has set three objectives to help recognize and celebrate World Mental Health Day. The goals include:
- Encourage help seeking behaviour
- Reduce the stigma associated with mental illness
- Foster connectivity throughout communities
In Australia, the symbol for Mental Health Awareness is the Flannel Flower. This hardy little Australian native flower represents the strength and beauty we all possess. Different varieties are found growing throughout Australia. It's adaptability and endurance help the flannel flower survive in harsh circumstances. Like the flannel flower, we develop resilience and the ability to adapt to new and different circumstances. If we can be like the flannel flower, we can maintain good mental health. |
Lenice and Andrew have endured more in the last two years than many people would ever endure. For the last two years, they have been knocked down again and again and again.
They have been given a lot of bad news and have had to make some very difficult decisions. They have watched Dexter struggle and fight for life, and have helped him face his cerebral palsy head on.
They have had their dreams smashed and have had to fight for Dexter.
They have spent countless nights in various hospitals and have a far greater understanding of medical terminology than either of them ever imagined possible.
They have felt the stares and pity of strangers and endured many thoughtless comments.
But, one of Lenice and Andrew's greatest strengths, is their ability to talk to each other... to openly discuss fears and worries, concerns and frustrations. They have been beside each other every step of the way - even when they were living apart (because of hospital stays). They listen to each other and support each other.
**You guys are just like flannel flowers!
in World Mental Health Month... talk.
- Encourage help seeking behaviour
- Reduce the stigma associated with mental illness
- Foster connectivity throughout communities
Reach out to anyone who might need some support and help to reduce the stigma of mental health. Smile and listen.
And, try not to judge anyone... because you don't always know what battles they are fighting.
