We want some ideas on who to support in 2016.
At times, we've had fundraisers for Dexter. He was given considerable support when he was diagnosed with cancer. At that time, Andrew was on apprentice wages and Lenice was doing casual teaching. Both of them spent days sitting with Dexter in hospital and they could not have managed without the support of that fundraiser.
Melissa has held a fundraiser for Dexter, too. He got some incredible therapy from it, and we learned how to include therapy in every thing we do, all day, every day. As a result, Dexter has learned many things and is much stronger, and we are more aware of ways to help him.
Dexter received support from many other people, in the last few years. He has received a year of fortnightly physiotherapy sessions from The Brooding Italian and an incredible family in Berry, with their Christmas lights. Dexter got a theratogs suit, to help 'turn on' his muscles. He was given a modified toilet/shower seat, which we really value. Dexter was also given a beach wheelchair, and was finally able to get to the beach. He loves it. The Minnamurra Lions Club helped buy him a modified bike and he has received many presents over the last few years.
Any money given to Dexter is used on Dexter.
This little boy has touched many hearts, with his determination, courage and cheeky nature.
We won a social media competition, that saw Dexter getting $5000 to go towards buying his standing frame. With the support of the Kiama Lions Club, Dexter had his own standing frame. The competition saw Dexter being gifted a $4000 walker by an anonymous donor.
Lenice gets financial support with her therapeutic massages and a beautiful lady helps with physiotherapy costs.
(Adding on the house renovations, we have a lot more fundraising to do!)
We've raised just over $33,000, so far, in Dexter's name.
We have given that money to the NSW Cancer Council, Camp Quality Illawarra and the Royal Flying Doctor. We're so proud of this, but we want to raise much, much more.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us in our fundraising.
Also, thank you to everyone who raises money for charities under Dexter's name, or because Dexter inspired them. A lot of money has been raised for a range of charities in that way.
In 2016, we want to try something new.
We want to help fundraise and raise awareness for some other charities.
What should we support? Who would you like to see us supporting?
We thought we could fundraise twice a year.
(As Dexter needs more equipment (because he is outgrowing everything!) we may need to hold a personal fundraising events, too.)
We do want to join Run Wollongong. We like the idea of Dexter being able to join in. He can be pushed in a wheelchair. We like that the money raised supports the Children's Ward at Wollongong Hospital.
What else can we do? We'd like to hear your ideas.
