How good are my friends!?

We're hoping to start renovating Dexter's home in July 2015. Dexter will need a wheelchair, and should get his first one this year. His home is not wheelchair friendly. There are stairs in two sections of the house, preventing him entry to the inside. Rooms are small, and a wheelchair will not fit through the kitchen doorway. Dexter will also an open plan styled home, to better enable him to access different areas of the house in a wheelchair. He will need sliding doors, as his cerebral palsy means he does not have the dexterity needed to turn a door knob. He will need wide, flat light switches and taps that are easy to flick. He will need a shower he can access, in a shower chair. Dexter is getting tall. When he is carried through the bathroom door, through the hallway and in to the lounge room, to be dressed, his feet sometimes hit the walls. He's too long. He needs wider hallways... or the removal of internal walls. The renovation plans are underway. Many people have already offered support. These renovations would not have been immediately possible, without the support of our incredible community. We have Rob from Coastal Windows and Doors and Lorenzo from Smith and Sons Renovations and Extensions Shellharbour supporting us. We have some cafes offering to provide some lunches for out tradie mates. The Doing it for Dexter project is getting ready to begin renovations. We're hoping for Mate's Rates and a little love. We want to reduce the cost of the renovations, to help Dexter's family. We want them to use their money on Dexter; his therapy and his specialised equipment. (Speech therapy and Occupational therapy each cost about $90 for a 30 minute session. A wheelchair has been quoted at about $14,000. We've applied for funding, so we will have a while before we can access one.) There are a few things we still need for the house: · Roof trusses, gutters · lighting, fittings · an electrician - labour & supplies · Turf · Fix Out (internal doors, architraves, skirtings, cavity sliders (870mm doors) · Flooring · Garage Doors · PC items: taps, toilets, oven, hotplate, · ducted air con · Insulation · Blinds/Awnings · Fencing How do we 'give back'? There will be temporary fencing around the house, during the renovations and all supporting businesses can add signage. We're giving shout outs on Dexter's webpage, mostly on the Doing it for Dexter blog. Posts on his facebook page (Doing it for Dexter) are linked to his twitter account @LoveDexter3 . WIN News will do another story, once renovations begin. If you would like to be involved email [email protected] We're hoping to get back on the radio. Thanks everyone for your wishes! Sloppy kisses! And today, he is 4! Love him.
To all my beautiful nurses... Happy International Nurse's Day. I wouldn't be here without you. Kisses xxx We might not always think about nurses, but when it comes down to it...
when we're sick and everything is going wrong, we realise how much we need them. I've needed lots and lots of support from nurses. I lived with nurses for the first four months of my life! Mum had to leave me, overnight, in the care of the nurses... from when I was a week old. That broke her heart, but she knew she was leaving me in good hands. It was nurses who gave me needles, hiding their faces from me, so I wouldn't blame them. Nurses sat with Mum and Dad and explained the complicated things the doctors had said, but that Mum and Dad didn't yet understand. They let them cry. Nurses watched me, monitored me and cared for me. They shook my chest and tickled me... to keep me breathing. Nurses held me down, while canulars and needles were put into me. Nurses got food and drink for Mum, when she wouldn't leave my side. Nurses have been there for me, a lot, over the last four years. When I was having chemotherapy treatments, I saw my nurses every week. We hate it when I'm in hospital. We had the long, tedious hospital stays. Sometimes, we get frustrated and cranky... and sometimes, it's the nurses who cop our frustrations. But, when it comes to it, its the nurses who look after me. And we want to say Thank You! We're proud that so many of my nurses still know me... remember me... care about me... even when they haven't seen me for a while. Two of my nurses were the first to hold my youngest sister... her first visitors. That's pretty cool. One of my NICU nurses came to visit me during one hospital stay, in her lunch break, but I was asleep. That was pretty cool. And then, there's our chocolate and coffee bearing friend, who spends her lunch breaks with us, when we're in Sydney. She was there when the crash carts were rushed in... and she supported Mum and Dad through it. Some things, you never forget. Thanks Nurses! Happy International Nurses Day! Today was a hard day at preschool. I was grumpy about something, but I couldn't use my words to say what I was about. It's times like that that we really hate my cerebral palsy. Everyone has to try and guess what's wrong. But, because no one knew what was wrong and why I was complaining, I was given cuddles to settle me. I liked the cuddles, they made me feel better! #cerebralpalsy #nonverbal

Return to Home page Find me on: facebook twitter instagram pinterest youtube Happy Mother's Day, Mum! I made this candle at preschool. I helped stick the coloured paper to the jar, and we put a candle inside it. Mum loves it! Love you! Thanks Preschool teachers! This is the first Mother's Day present I made for Mum. Mum and Dad gave us a surprise today.
We went to the Zoo! We patted a wombat, possums and an echidna! We liked feeding the goats... they even licked my face! What a fun day! This was the day I went stand up paddle boarding with Paolo. It was cold and windy (So, please excuse the noise of the wind), but it was our last chance to get on the stand up paddle board for the summer. And, I was about to get my hip surgery done, and then be in my brace for five weeks. It was a bit cold, this day, but I really enjoyed it. See some photos here. #raisingawareness #cerebralpalsy #SUP This is a bit old, now, but it's still good. Pokky was making that funny noise, and blowing raspberries on my neck. He always makes that noise. I love it! I make the noise back at him. This day, we had fun with that noise... I laughed, too. Nanoo thought it was funny, too. #cerebralpalsy #nonverbal #raisingawareness |
