When it's hard to control your facial muscles, you get stared at.
When you are in a wheelchair, you get stared at.
When you are non-verbal, but very loud, you get stared at.
CP Challenge: Be stared at. Wear your strangest clothes. Wear a bright wig. Wear funny shoes. And then, go to the shops or somewhere with a lot of people.
Being stared at is something that happens to Dexter, all the time. When he is in his local community, there are so many people who know him, that he rarely gets stared at.
But, if we are anywhere else, people stare at Dexter.
Some people stand a metre from him, blatantly staring. Unapologetically staring.
We hate it.
Just because a person has a disability, is no reason to stare at them.
No one should be stared at.
This is part of the reason we are so open and honest, when we share Dexter's stories. We want people to know about his disabilities, so they learn to see Dexter. We want them to see beyond the wheelchair and the disabilities, so they can see Dexter's personality and strengths.
Be stared at, today.
Have someone walk behind you, so they can see the people who turn back to have another look.
Some people deal with this, every day of their life.
