In 2017, he got a lot of love and friendship.
Thank you.

#10 We celebrated when Dexter brought home his very first school certificate! (And, Aunty Carol tried her hand at photo-bombing.)
*This was a Camp Quality family camp.
Dexter has had surgeries on his hips, which set him back over two years in his development and progress. His hip was dislocated and he could not bear weight on it, so walking was impossible. One leg is now two centimetres shorter, so all of Dexter's shoes need a wedge added, to one shoe.
Walking brings us incredible happiness and is also one of our biggest heart breakers. It's so hard to see Dexter struggle so much, just to walk.
Dexter has worked really hard, with his walking, but sadly, we didn't get him walking down to the beach. Yet.
Unfortunately, Dexter needs more surgeries (on both hips) which will be another significant setback. At the moment, we don't want to think about it, because we don't feel strong enough. Yet.
At the end of his first year of school, Dexter received a significant end of year certificate. He was recognised for his citizenship and it was mentioned that he brings out the best in everyone. We were so proud and so happy.
**Story is here.
Dexter had "Hi! I'm Dexter!" pre-recorded on his communication switch. He made sure he said hello to every one! We were so proud. This was a significant moment and a big high light, after all the hurdles Dexter had passed.
This was shared in the Kiama Independent and is one of their top stories for 2017. Thanks for celebrating this huge milestone with us!
**His first day of Kindergarten story is here.
**His re-cap of Kindergarten can be read here.
He has a strong personality. Dexter is amazingly determined and patient. He cares for people and has a good memory. He's resilient and tries his best to make the people who believe in him, proud of him.
And, he has a wickedly cheeky sense of humour!
He is now five years cancer clear.
His hepatoblastoma was a huge setback, in terms of his therapies and strength, but even during chemotherapy treatments, Dexter tried to do his exercises. The cancer was found early, for which we will always be so grateful. His oncologists developed a personalised treatment plan, for Dexter, in an attempt to save his hearing. (His vision is already impaired.)
This was the day we first heard 'remission'. Dexter was happy to take this photo with his oncologist.
**Story here.
It didn't work, but we were overwhelmed by the number of people who joined us, to try to make this happen.
Having a child with severe and multiple disabilities is very isolating and lonely.
Our lives are difficult and exhausting.
Our lives are very different to the lives of anyone we know.
Sometimes, we feel very alone.
So, when this photo was shared and shared and shared again, we felt such incredible love and support for Dexter. We are often told how he inspires people, has helped people get through tough days and how he has captured the hearts of people, all over the world. When such love is shown for him, we realised just how loved our little man is, and, we are so grateful.
Thank you for loving Dexter.
Thank you for believing in him.
He really is a great kid.
This one, which shows pure happiness and one of the best smiles we have photographed. Dexter loved meeting this snake. His cerebral palsy stops him from smiling, but his happiness shines from his eyes.
In this photo... the happiness shines from his whole face.
We love the colours. We love the individual styles of the kids. We love how relaxed and comfortable everyone is. We love our family.
And, this is the first time we have had a family photograph, with Dexter's wheelchair. Usually, he is sitting and being held. It wasn't until we enlarged this photo and hung it in the house, that we realised Dexter was in his wheelchair.
We've all grown a lot, this year, becoming stronger and more confident, braver and more determined.
