Each year, a group of performers put on an amazing show. They work incredibly hard to put it all together. Each Friday night, they rehears their dance steps.
Over the years, The Music Makers have performed at many local fundraising and community events. They compete in eisteddfods and have performed in Sydney a few times.
The Music Makers are Melissa, Nicole and an amazing support crew.
Each of the performers has a disability. That doesn't stop any of them.
Dexter has been lucky enough to dance with the Music Makers at their annual concerts, for the last five years. We have really enjoyed watching some of the other performers, over the years. We have seen the positive impact music and dance has had on their lives. We have seen their confidence grow. We have seen them become more social and willing and able to engage in social activities. We have seen beautiful friendships grow.
Music has done this. Dance has done this.
The Music Makers' annual concert is a great way to spend a Friday night. There will be parents with tears in their eyes; watching their children dance on stage. There will be massive smiles and hearts bursting with pride. There will be laughter and there will be love.
This Friday night, come along and watch the Music Makers perform in their annual concert. This is a major fundraiser for them. The Music Makers are associated with The Disability Trust.
Dexter has been lucky enough to dance over the years, in these concerts.
The first year, Dexter danced in one song. He was sitting on his Mum's lap and she helped him move his hands, during the dance. He loved it.
The next year, Dexter was in a baby carrier. He was able to move his arms and legs to the music, with his Mum's support. He was a bit big for it and didn't feel very comfortable, but he loved the music and the dancing. He did most of the dances, that year.
Then, Dexter was strapped into his Upsee. He was standing, strapped to his Mum's legs. When she moved her leg, Dexter's leg also moved. Dexter loved being able to dance, standing up. Dexter was in every dance, and loved it!
The following year, Dexter was in the Upsee, again. He was outgrowing it and it hurt him, a little. His Mum's back ached afterwards, but Dexter loved it! He refused to let his Mum help him with the correct arm movements, in the later songs, because he was too excited and wanted to do his own version of the dances. He was in all of the dances that year, too.
This year, when Dexter was invited to dance again, we asked Dexter, like always, whether he wanted to dance again. When he hears its dancing with Melissa and the Music Makers, there is always a big nod.
This year, Dexter won't be in all of the dances; it's a bit tricky, because he has outgrown the Upsee and cannot be held in a standing position. He would not be able to sit on someone's lap, because he would be constantly trying to stand up, to better let himself dance. (He's a cheeky one!)
But, Dexter will be dancing!
We will share photos soon.
