When Dexter's first sister was a baby, she was often put down in a hurry, so we could tend to Dexter. She was safe. She was loved. But, often, her brother had to come first.
The first sister is a little more serious and more of a carer than the littlest one. The older one has seen more and been through more of the harder days. She lived in a home that was often filled with worry and stress. She was loved and she was safe, but we were not doing so well and she didn't hear us laugh very often.
The littlest one has heard more laughter and spent her earliest years in a home that was more positive. She wasn't there for the cancer days. She missed some surgeries. We were stronger. She is fiercely protective of Dexter and always reminds people to include him. She holds his hands and is often the first to want to show him something. She speaks to her brother easily, though he doesn't answer in words we can understand.
The littlest one loves her brother easily.
The first sister has taken on more of a carer's role. She worries. She is starting to express sadness at the realisation of what her brother is missing out on, because of his cerebral palsy. She looks tough, but she's struggling a little bit with how massive the cerebral palsy impact is.
These two incredible, resilient, gorgeous girls live a cerebral palsy life.
And, it's not easy.
We are stronger now, so there is more fun in their lives and (hopefully) just enough craziness to help them believe that being different is ok. It can even be fun.
We are so proud of Dexter's sisters.
There will be many hurdles for them to overcome. There will be hurtful comments they will hear and they will realise more and more just how massively cerebral palsy impacts on Dexter's life.
We are sure they will handle everything that comes their way.
We know they love Dexter; unconditionally, fiercely and wordlessly.
It can't be easy, having a sibling with severe disabilities.
So, today is for them. For Dexter's sisters.
We're sending out love to all of the kids (and adults) who have a sibling with disabilities.
We couldn't do this without you.
