We'll do a bit of a 'Who's Who?',
so you will know a little more about the people helping out with #DoingitforDexter.
Meet... Melissa
so you will know a little more about the people helping out with #DoingitforDexter.
Meet... Melissa
Melissa and Dexter have a special bond. When Dexter hear's Melissa's voice
(even if he has not seen her in months), he turns his head, trying to find her.
Melissa helped Dexter out with her first #DoingitforDexter fund raiser.
She raised $10,000 and Dexter was able to go to Adelaide, for some intensive Conductive Education therapy. We have seen improved strength in Dexter, as a result. The other beautiful improvement we have noticed, is that Dexter is now using his eyes to see people and things around him, much more frequently. (Dexter's vision impairment is cortical vision impairment. His eyes work fine, but the message gets lost between his eyes and his brain.)
Melissa is just 19 years old.
What she has achieved
in those nineteen years is phenomenal.
And now, Melissa is driving
the Mate's Rates Renovation #DoingitforDexter.
For a while now, Melissa has been writing
letters and emails, looking for a way to help improve Dexter's house. As soon as the Mate's Rates idea was mentioned, Melissa set the works in motion. Before long, we went public with the 'crazy idea' and started the process of finding a 'foreman' and tradies.
Melissa is now sending out countless letters and emails, searching for tradies and suppliers who can help out, to renovate and improve Dexter's home. Already, she has compiled an impressive list of volunteers, and has found a home for Lenice and Andrew and the kids to live in, while the renovations are being done.
Melissa has great plans for the 'Big Reveal', once the house renovations have been completed. And, you're all invited!
Melissa works and volunteers for the Disability Trust. She is completing two degrees. She is also the creator and director of the Music Makers. (This is an incredible group of young adults and teenagers, who love to dance and act and perform... and, they all have a disability.)
Melissa has included Dexter in the Music Maker Family, which is a group of the Music Makers, their incredible parents and their siblings. Knowing these people, and being supported by them, has been incredibly empowering for Lenice and Andrew, and Dexter's sisters have the opportunity to see Dexter, and other people with disabilities, being cheered for, not stared out.
Hopefully, we might be lucky enough to have the Music Makers perform at the house, on the 'Big Reveal Day'. They really are a fantastic group of people!

We have an email address, where you can contact us, to offer support:

Keep an eye on this blog, because we'll be sharing the renovation story here.
We are planning on fencing the house off, and covering the fence with black plastic, to keep the renovations hidden from Lenice and Andrew, because we know they will do some drive-bys and try to sneak a peek. The outside of the fence can be covered in tradie business signs. (Anyone got fence? Or black plastic?)
Once the renovations begin, we will be careful about the photos we post, because we want Lenice and Andrew to walk out of their current house, and then... walk back into their completely renovated, disability friendly home.
We don't want to give away too much by sharing photos they will see.
After they have seen their new home, we will share all of the photos.
