Conductive Education at Future Footprints

Future Footprints - Conductive Education
We were able to provide Dexter with four weeks of Conductive Education therapy at Future Footprints.
This is very holistic therapy... everything is about learning, and improving movement and independence, but the exercises are hidden in fun games and songs... with lots and lots of praise, enthusiasm and trust.
I can't walk... and I can't crawl... not without help.
I can't get myself into a sitting position...
But, I'm much stronger and have new motivation to continue trying as hard as I can, to do the things everyone else does, without thinking. We've got a range of new songs and tricks, new language and prompts...
all which will help me to continue getting stronger and stronger.
Here are some of the things I learned and got better at while I was in Adelaide:
There was so much sitting!
I sat on a chair...
a regular chair, and held on to a small bar.
I needed some support, but not much.
On the ground, I sat on the floor, cross-legged.
Arm wraps made my arms feel stronger.
Sometimes, I sat all by myself... sometimes, I needed a gentle touch at the back of my head, or on my arm, to remind me to sit strongly. And sometimes, I needed lots of support. Singing songs helped distract me from the sore muscles, and reminded me to sit well.

There was kicking (& sneaky sitting!)
There was drawing (& sneaky sitting!)
There was colouring (& sneaky sitting!)
There was communicating (& sitting!)
There was eating (& sneaky sitting!)
There was a lot of sitting!
I'm proud of how much I improved!

There was a lot of crawling... crawling from one activity to another. My arm wraps helped my arms feel stronger. I can't get myself into a crawling position, but I am better at holding this position!
I liked the feeling of being
up on my hands and knees.

They were always telling me to look at everything... look at the book... look at the feathers... look at people... One big change everyone at home noticed, was how much more I am looking at things. I am really trying to focus my eyes, and really see the things around me.

The walking was always the hardest,
and I cried most days.
There was singing while I was walking... but my muscles still hurt. I got much, much better... and much stronger. I am proud of my improvement and my efforts!

I worked on stretching my arm up - and reaching for things...
At home, its much easier to dress me now, because I am better at straightening my arms and reaching.

I made a lot of progress, in those four weeks, in Adelaide.

Future Footprints, in Adelaide, aims to teach those with Cerebral Palsy and other physical disabilities through Conductive education, to reach beyond what is expected; motivating them to improve, to achieve and to gain independence, socially, physically and cognitively.
Future Footprints is an Approved Better Start Provider in Australia.
CE teaches participants skills to meet the challenges of everyday life. They need to be active in this process, not just passively ‘receiving’, but more ‘working’ to achieve. Conductive Education focuses on the skills needed to become more independent.
