Some people with cerebral palsy have difficulty speaking. Many people need communication devices to enable them to have conversations.
Dexter is non-verbal.
If you are non-verbal and have limited mobility, you might be thirsty... but, unable to explain that you would like a drink. You might not be able to get one for yourself.
When Dexter wants us to know something, he makes loud noises. He might move his hands a lot or move his head. This gets our attention and we can start trying to determine what he wants.
Imagine you are non-verbal and need a drink.
You cannot get it for yourself.
How long does it take before someone notices you want something?
How do you manage to tell them you are thirsty? (Many people with cerebral palsy cannot use clear hand signals, so try not to use your hands to make a drinking motion.)
Good luck!
