You gave us so much support! Thank you!
We love the name Janelle suggested: Dexter's Doing it for the Dads.
We're going to aim to arrange at least 8 fun weekends. If the Dad's group does one of these a month, they will have almost a year's worth of weekends.
Already, we have been offered two things!
Grace from Fernwood Shellharbour has offered to provide a trainer, for a bootcamp. This might be a bit intimidating, for the dads. We know that, since Dexter, we have put on weight and lost our fitness. Sadly, this is not uncommon when you have a child with a disability. But, an outdoor bootcamp would be fun, and could bring lots of laughs!
And then, Kel and Mahlah from The Pines, have offered to provide some gelato. Surely, after a bit of bootcamp, these dads would love some gelato!
And then, they could head to the local hotel, chat over a beer and watch the waves. That would be a great weekend activity. It's that easy to do!
Thank you Grace, Fernwood Shellharbour, Kel and Mahlah and The Pines!
People are great!
By providing these dads with the opportunity to be together, we are giving them the chance to chat. And, by chatting, these dads will be supporting each other in ways that cannot be measured.
Here are the activities that have been suggested:
Segway tours, a Dolphin cruise, the high ropes at Nowra, Berry Sport & Rec Camp, Milson Island Sport & Rec Camp and Stanwell Tops (these could even be family weekends), Hangdog, Football games, Golf days, Stand Up Paddle boarding, Canoe and kayaking, Illawarra Fly, an Illawarra Hawks game, Harley rides, Partee virtual golf, a Bathurst weekend, Ferrari rides, Go carting, Ten pin bowling, barefoot bowling, the Donald Bradman Cricket museum and a Sydney Harbour Bridge climb.
Imagine if we could arrange some of these!
We’ll make sure we publicise the supporting businesses by splashing their business name and logo across social media! #NorthcottDadsGroup
The group has about 16 dads. They all have a child with a disability.
"Mainly, the group is there to assist fathers who have children with a disability to have that day away to relax and just socialize with other guys in similar situations. Just leaving and having 'me time' is hard for blokes and this does help a lot. It's a good release and relief to talk to other dads in the same position as you, so you don't feel alienated and alone."
The group doesn't have funding. The people at Northcott are happy for us to arrange some fun weekends. They can also take charitable donations, which they will pass on, in full, to the Dad's group.
**Dexter does not attend Northcott. Dexter's dad is not going to benefit from this. We are not doing it for us. We are doing it because Dads need support, too. They need someone who they can talk to.... who won't be afraid, who can listen and understand, who can support and encourage.
These dads need mates who understand them, and their child.
Spread the word? If you can help, message us on this page, email at [email protected] or message us on the Doing it for Dexter facebook page.
Thank you! xx
