They are getting ready for their 2015 Creative Performance Evening.
Last year, I danced with the Music Makers, for the very first time. I sat on Mum's lap, and she helped me with the dance moves. She was a bit shy, but we had lots of fun! I love music, and I love it when everyone feels happy. I danced with my friend, Nat, and she was so gentle and kind. And, we held hands. Mum was copying her, so we were doing the girl's moves... and I was supposed to be doing the boy's moves!
The Music Makers has grown in numbers, over the years, because it is such a fantastic program. The group has people with autism, down syndrome and other disabilities. Some of the Music Makers are non-verbal, and some of them need a lot of support, to remember the steps and to stay in the right places.
But, everyone has a great time.
And, they have danced in front of some pretty big audiences! They danced in front of thousands of people, in Sydney! This is them, performing at Carols by the Lake.
The performers meet and rehearse, every Friday night. Through the Music Makers, they have developed confidence. Non-verbal performers have found their voice in song. Kids who would not let anyone touch their hair, can now wear it styled and clipped back. Life long changes have occurred. The Music Makers has given the performers, and their families, a chance to celebrate, through music, dance and drama. Last year, Dexter was on stage, with them. His sister watched. And clapped and cheered, and loved seeing him on stage. She heard the sounds of the applause, and saw the admiration for the performers. For a little girl, with a brother who has severe disabilities, this was an incredible experience. She saw his ability being celebrated. We love the Music Makers, and everything they represent. |
