I was a premature baby. I was a NICU kid.
Sometimes, for a brief moment, we forget what we went through...
I was born nine weeks early. My lungs were not steroid ready and were under-developed. They were not ready to breathe and I had to struggle and fight.
I was in three hospital NICUs for 144 days.
I had countless procedures. I was tested for so many things and had several transfusions. I had a lot of people worried.
Mum and Dad nearly lost me, a few times. They watched the nurses and doctors rubbing my chest. pinching me, flicking my nappy; telling me to breathe. They have seen me being resuscitated, a few times.
I struggled to gain weight. Every gram counted, and often, I lost weight.
I was on millilitres of milk, for my feeds, and often couldn't tolerate that much milk.
I guess, really, I shouldn't be here, but I fought and so my family did, too.
We remember the little babies who didn't survive... Some things will never leave you.
For everyone who's been through the NICU and premature baby journey, or who are currently going through it, we are thinking of you.
