We were finding so many excuses not to exercise. There were so many reasons to allow ourselves to comfort eat and to drink alcohol.
Dexter was sick... It was too hard to go for a walk with all the kids... We were in hospital... We'd just gotten out of hospital... We were worried about Dexter...
We were scared... We were financially stressed... We'd been stared at...
There were endless reasons and countless excuses.
For a while, we were in and out of hospital, helping Dexter fight his cancer.
Being healthy just wasn't something we worried about.
But then, in 2017, we realised we were overweight.
We realised we were not healthy.
And, we knew Dexter would need us to be strong and healthy.
We lift him, a lot. He's heavy. As we get older and our bodies become weaker, Dexter will get bigger and heavier. We need to be strong enough to care for him.
We were doing ok. We were strong.
It didn't matter what people said or thought about us.
We were good enough.
We started to focus a little more on ourselves.
We convinced ourselves to believe in ourselves.
And, it worked.
We are still easily stressed and often hurt and angry, but we are mentally stronger.
And, we are becoming healthy and fit and strong.
In 2018, Andrew and Lenice are focusing on being healthy and strong.
Lenice is the main person lifting and carrying Dexter. She also lifts his wheelchair.
She has been going to her local gym for nine years because she needs to be strong and fit.
We are so proud of her.
2018 is only a month old, but she is definitely owning 2018.
