Dexter had a good night. His catheter has been taken out. He is getting back to his cheeky little self... his tongue is poking out again and he is looking around the place, following noises he hears. He still has his oxygen prongs in. He still hasn't eaten anything, but is enjoying a diet of lipids and drip solutions. Have a great day, Little Man!
Dexter was sleeping, his head against the rails of his bed, when Lenice and Andrew left him for the night. Dexter is becoming more like his old self now. He has very caring nurses, who are looking out for him and keeping him comfortable with Hamish (Dexter's cow). Dexter is slowly have sedation drugs taken from his system - which means he is becoming more alert. His eyes are opening more. He is absolutely aware of people around him and is enjoying having his hand held and his head stroked. He has started glaring at his nurse and his parents, no doubt angry about the pain he has been in. These are all great things. Hopefully, Dexter will sleep comfortably tonight and will continue to regain his strength, determination and fighting spirit. Our Cheeky Little Man is on the way back!
Unfortunately... someone had to hold Dexter so they could change his sheets. This is the first time he has been held since Tuesday. With his oxygen mask swapped for oxygen nasal prongs, we can kiss him again, too! The tube got taken out and he is now breathing with the help of Oxygen prongs. In true Dexter style, when they put the prongs in his nose, he had a tantrum and kept holding his breath and turned purple! All is ok now, Dexter is just high on drugs! He had a great morning with his aunties while Andrew and I got out in the sun and fresh air for an hour or so! Dexter had a more settled night last night! Apparently, at 1am, he thought it was awake time. He spiked another temperature of 38.6 this morning. The doctors are looking at his bloods today, to see whether he is festering an infection in his central line.
When Lenice went into his ICU room this morning, Dexter was not impressed with her. (Obviously, she and Andrew put him in the hospital - so it's their fault all of this happened!) Today will be another trial and error day with our Little Man - but his nurse has been told not to give him anything new! He is getting a reputation now! Another day, another drug, another reaction! Dexter's temperature got to 39.2 and his heart rate got to 190 after being given meds to stop his cankles! All just after his mum got back beside him! He has settled now though, and will hopefully have a good night. Our Little Man is still in pain, which is causing some problems with his breathing. The machines were there to help him. He's doing ok. A big thank you to everyone... the love and support we are being shown is amazing and gives us so much strength. Dexter is still sleeping. The doctors have given him morphine for the pain. So far, he has not reacted badly to the morphine. He is still sleeping... but starting to feel a little grumpy.
Our Little Man will most likely be feeling a little grumpy when he finally wakes up. He is still in the Childrens' ICU. (This means Lenice and Andrew will both sleep in the Ronald McDonald house... neither has to spend the night beside Dexter's bed.) I had an OK night last night. I am still in pain and the doctors are still wondering how to take the pain away. They are reluctant to give me opiates - my history tells tham I do not react well to opiates and they'd prefer to find something else. I am on a ventilator, but I have never liked ventilators and I am breathing on my own. The doctors took a couple of x-rays of my chest last night. The first one was a little unclear and the second one isn't back yet. I'll most likely stay in the CICU (Childrens' Intensive Care Unit) today - which means Mum and Dad both get to sleep at Ronny Mac's (Ronald McDonald Charity House). They like it when they can sleep.
Can you see my new scar? I've got a few - but this ones a beauty! |
