I got to drive a powered wheelchair!
It would have been a bit too tricky for me to use my hands, so... I pressed a button with my head!
In this photo, I’m using my head to hit the switch that the man is holding. When I put my head on the switch, the wheelchair moved. When I moved my head off it, it stopped! (You can see me concentrating on the switch in this photo.)
It will take me a really long time to get used to doing this, but, this is a start!
The man who showed me the wheelchair was proud of my good listening and Mum liked seeing me being so independent.
The last wheelchair I trialled was quoted at over $16,000. This powered wheelchair would cost double that! And, If I got this powered wheelchair, I would need to have our van modified, so the wheelchair can be driven into it. We are hoping our current van can be modified, but we might have to buy a newer model first, and then get the modifications done.
For now, we have to hope my NDIS plan will cover the cost of this powered wheelchair. Then, I’ll have to get lots of training on how to use it.
If I get this, I won’t be able to get my other manual wheelchair - the one I tried the other day, because funding won’t cover both.
It will be a long wait.
But, imagine... Independence!
