Mums (or Dads!) may have to carry small children, shopping baskets, or walkers. They might be pushing wheelchairs or prams.
Their child with cerebral palsy may be using a walker.
This makes grocery shopping much more difficult.
For adults with cerebral palsy, shopping can be a challenge. They might be in a wheelchair or be using a walker. Carrying a basket and reaching the higher shelves might be impossible.
CP Challenge: Go shopping, imagining you are pushing a wheelchair. Try to fit your weekly shop of groceries into a basket. You could try to push two trolleys, as though you were pushing a wheelchair and a trolley.
Try to only buy items on the middle shelves, as though you can't reach the top shelves and can't bend down to the lower shelves.
Now that Dexter is in school, his mother usually does the family shopping without him. When he was younger, there was a pram and a toddler. Then, there was a wheelchair and two young children.
When Dexter does go shopping, one of his younger sisters often pushes his wheelchair.
Everyday, people with cerebral palsy and their families face struggles and challenges that most of us don't ever think about.
