Many people with cerebral palsy have difficulty using one side of their body. This is called hemiplegia. They might have trouble with their left leg and left arm, or they may have trouble with their right arm and right leg.
(Dexter's cerebral palsy is quadriplegic, so all four limbs cause him trouble.)
To better understand the challenges this might present, get dressed using only one arm. Hold the other arm flat against your side, so you are not tempted to use it.
Do your shoe laces up, button your shirt and do up your belt, with just one hand.
Not easy, right?
People with cerebral palsy may take a little longer to complete everyday tasks, because they can have trouble telling their muscles what needs to be done. Cerebral palsy damages the part of the brain that controls our muscles.
A lot of concentration and effort is needed for people with cerebral palsy to do things we do without thinking about.
Don't underestimate people with cerebral palsy!
