This will be my fourth convoy!
That means, I've been to Convoy every year of my life.
The first year, I slept through everything. The second year, I was between chemotherapy treatments, and not feeling very well. I actually ended up in hospital that night. The third year, we were much happier. I was cancer clear, and we had a few new friends in the Convoy. It was a special day.
We smiled and laughed and cried and cheered.
This year, we had hoped to do the Dexter's Mates idea again, but in July/August, when we would have started collecting names, there were some problems beyond our control. We didn't think we could do the #DEXTERSMATES.
So, we are not doing the #DEXTERSMATES, this year. We're so sorry!
Now, we have found out that we could do Dexter's Mates.
We would love to do it again, but we just don't feel we have the time to do it properly. Lenice is 38 weeks pregnant and Dexter is set to have painful surgery on the 7th of October. One of his bones will be cut and re-positioned. He will be in hospital for up to a week, and then, in 'casts', for six weeks, in a fixed seated position. He'll need a lot of care. He is scheduled to have the casts removed the day after Convoy. Once the casts are removed, he will experience more intense pain, as his legs move into a new and unfamiliar position. Strong pain medication is required for this time, and he will spend another week in Sydney.
There are nine weeks until Convoy, so that would only be 7 weeks of name collecting, for us. Less another week for surgery and some time for a baby.
Last year, we worked really hard to get our Dexter's Mates names.
We didn't mind the work, because we love being able to give back and help out.
The hardest thing for us, is knowing you are all there, ready and waiting to become a #DEXTERSMATE, again. We feel as though we are letting you down.
We just don't have the time. We're sorry to everyone who's been waiting to become a Dexter's Mate, this year.
We'll still be at Convoy! We're still supporting Convoy!
You can still have your name on the Truck. Maybe, tell them Dexter sent you.
Last Convoy, it rained so much! We hid Dexter under the People's Truck!
Registration and payment details are being finalised. When they are ready to start taking registrations, they will let us know.
