For a long time, we couldn't use the word 'wheelchair' in a sentence, when we were talking about Dexter. We used anything else, but not that word.
(More here)
We weren't ready.
We were not yet strong enough to face the reality that Dexter's cerebral palsy was going to force him into a wheelchair.
We were afraid of so many things.
We were scared.
We were heartbroken.
Dexter's wheelchair is not a part of our lives. It goes with us everywhere. We are used t it.
We are used to scanning the signs, to find the lifts or the ramps.
We race each other, sometimes, to see who can get to the top first... the wheelchair or the people on the stairs.
We are comfortable with the wheelchair. Now.
We wish Dexter could walk! We wish he could tun and play! We wish he could choose when to use his chair and when to hop out. We wish we didn't have to lift the chair.
But, thats our life. It's Dexter's life.
We will never stop his physiotherapy. We will make him spend time in his walker and his standing frame. We still want to see him walking across a room.
But, now, we can say wheelchair.
Dexter has outgrown his first wheelchair.
We are looking into accessing a newer, bigger one, for him.
It's a bit exciting, actually.
So, before we celebrate International Wheelchair Day, we want to send some love and strength to the families who are still afraid of the thought of needing a wheelchair.
Don't rush yourselves. Spend th time you need, to grieve the loss of a walking option.
And then, when you order your first wheelchair.... pick awesome colours!
This is an old video, now, but it really proved to us that Dexter's wheelchair was not always going to hold him back! This was an awesome day.
