CP Challenge - Look out for the car parking spaces designed for people with disabilities.
Are there enough? Are they all full?
Are cars parked in them, without permits?
Is access to shop doors easy?
For people with cerebral palsy who can walk, they might need a great deal of effort to walk. Spending time walking through the shops might be exhausting for them.
Some people with cerebral palsy rely on walkers, which also takes a lot of energy. They need easy access to the shops from their cars.
And, some people with cerebral palsy are in wheelchairs. The wider spaces in a disability car parking space allow easy access to the wheelchair doors. They also allow extra room on the sides of the car, which makes lifting people out of car seats much easier.
Usually, we are able to find a disability parking space and we are grateful that we can use them.
We never use these parking spaces when Dexter is not in the car.
So far, we have not received a nasty letter or a complaint from using disabled parking spaces. We know that sometimes, people with children with disabilities do receive them. We do sometimes get funny looks, when we jump out of the van. But, as soon as we lift Dexter's wheelchair out of the back, those people look away.
*There are many other reasons a person may be entitled to a disability parking permit. Cerebral palsy is just one reason.
