Remember the first time your baby called you Mum? (Or, Dad?)
Remember the first time they said "I love you."
Remember their first words?
Dexter can't use words to tell us he loves us.
He can't talk to us about school or his friends.
Because he can't tell us, we'll tell the world.
CP Challenge - Wordless Love.
Today, talk to three people about cerebral palsy.
When your child cannot talk to you, life becomes much more complicated.
You don't know when they are hot or cold, tired or sick, hungry or thirsty.
They can't tell you about the things they are interested in or the things that scare them.
You always have to guess.
They can't say they love you. Or Happy Birthday.
And, that is hard. And, lonely. And, scary.
Because Dexter can't talk to us in words, we speak for him.
We say the things we imagine he would say.
We say it in ways we think he might say them.
We are Dexter's voice, until he finds his own way of communicating with us.
Many people with cerebral palsy lack the ability to use words.
They understand what is going on around them. They have ideas and opinions.
Help us raise awareness? Help us convince the world that people who are non-verbal do want to talk to us. They want to join conversations. They just haven't found a way. Yet.
And, they are listening! (To everything we say!)
Many people with cerebral palsy use technology, to help them speak.
We're excited to see where technology will take Dexter!
