1. The day I came home from my hip surgery and finally got to see my girls
I loved swimming with Ron. I was blowing bubbles under water and working o hard at my kicking. I didn't like the floating business; I had to lie still and that wasn't fun!
We did a lot of therapy at home, with the walker and standing frame.
I loved playing basketball! My wheelchair can never go fast enough!
At home, I worked with my eyegaze; playing games and writing sentences by choosing pictures. It's not easy, but I'll get there.
At school, I worked on using the PODD communication book. I told my teachers "I like this. It's good. I'm clever. I'm being funny'. I also told them news was boring, which wasn't very respectful (but, true). I also write a very cool story, with the help of my teachers. It was called 'Pirate Pokky'.
(Read about the realities of the surgery and the setbacks here.)
In 2018, my only other hospital visits were related to my epilepsy. One week, I had at least 13 seizures. They were big ones and we were all exhausted. We are so proud at how strong I am getting.
I did have botox in my hips, thumbs and one calf, to help loosen my tight muscles.
We trialed a powered wheelchair, too! That was fun!
At school, we shaved our hair for the Leukaemia Foundation. We raised money for Relay for Life and supported the Lions Club's Stamps for Mobility Walkers idea.
We loved the Camp Quality Christmas party and I went on a day excursion, too. The KidzWish Christmas Party was so fun! The Starlight Fun Day was great, too!
We had film crews come to the house, to film stories about me and our life with disabilities. Mum spoke for the Disability Trust's Kid's Fund and Kidzwish. (video)
Mum spoke to a few audiences about me, my disabilities, our inclusive approach to everything and my mainstream schooling success. My friend Jane travelled to Malaysia, to tell the people there about my life, too.
My swimming school, Shellharbour Swim Academy, collected drink bottles all year. They sent them to return and earn and gave me the money. Thank you!!
But always, always there is love.
We really appreciate that!
Here's to an amazing 2019.
Love, Dexter.
